STORY
This work explores the quiet, shadowed side of the coastal landscape. Midnight Moss was inspired by the deep, saturated colors of the lowcountry at dusk—where the greens turn to velvet and the sky begins to pull in navy and teal.
Part of a series focused on the physical “strata” of a painting, this piece uses heavy layering to create a sense of history. It captures the resilience of the palm tree, standing firm as the light fades, offering a sense of calm and groundedness to any space it inhabits.
PROCESS
The creation involved an intensive process of additive and subtractive layering. The artist built up a base of rich navy and aquatic blues before applying a dense “mossy” green. The palm form was then carved into these wet layers, revealing the “strata” of colors underneath. This technique provides a unique, tactile grit and a sophisticated physical presence that changes as the light hits the canvas from different angles.
