STORY
Sulfur Sunrise explores the blinding clarity of a coastal morning. By utilizing a saturated, “sulfur” yellow palette, the work simulates the way intense light can flatten distance while simultaneously revealing every ridge and crack in the landscape. The three palms are positioned with a sense of rhythmic movement, standing as dark, graphic anchors in an otherwise ethereal field of gold.
While the color is immediate and arresting, the true character of the piece lies in its physical history. The surface is heavily worked, inviting the viewer to trace the edges where the paint has been distressed and layered to create a “stratified” look that mirrors the passing of time and the accumulation of light.
PROCESS
Utilizing a professional-grade mix of acrylic and mixed media on canvas, the artist employs a signature layering technique to build physical depth. In this approach, the palm silhouettes are carved out from the surrounding texture rather than simply applied to the surface. This process of subtraction and addition creates a “stratified” effect, where the color blocking and sculpted paint work together to bring a simple motif into a tactile, three-dimensional space.
