STORY
Crimson Core is a centerpiece of the Stratified Palms series, developed during an intuitive painting session. This work explores the relationship between a bold, graphic surface and the complex history found beneath it. By utilizing a monochromatic palette, the piece commands attention with a strong sense of self, using varied shades of crimson to create a powerful visual impact.
While the design appears simple at first glance, a closer look reveals the intentional depth of the physical layers. It is an exploration of the idea that there is always more than what is visible on the surface, taking a clean design concept and giving it a striking, tactile presence.
PROCESS
Utilizing a professional-grade mix of acrylic and mixed media on canvas, the artist employs a signature layering technique to build physical depth. In this approach, the palm silhouettes are carved out from the surrounding texture rather than simply applied to the surface. This process of subtraction and addition creates a “stratified” effect, where the color blocking and sculpted paint work together to bring a simple motif into a multi-dimensional space.
