Coral Grief is a piece that spans a lifetime of growth; begun when the artist was twenty and in a completely different place in life, it was finally brought to completion after a move to Charleston almost a decade later. It embodies the philosophy of “better late than never,” standing as a testament to the fact that we—and the things we create—are only complete when the spirit moves us, not when a calendar dictates.
The work is a profound meditation on patience in transformation. It represents the courage to leave a thing unfinished until you have the perspective and the peace to see it through. PROCESS
The depth of this piece is a direct result of time itself. Working with a restricted palette of deep blacks and vibrant reds, the artist focused on building significant texture that physically catches the light. By returning to a canvas started years prior, the artist was able to layer new perspectives and raw energy over old foundations. The resulting texture is rich, gritty, and intentional, reflecting a powerful harmony between the past and the present that only the true passage of time can produce.
